OUR LEGACY

From Planet Earth to Your Big Day: A New Journey in Film

Award-Winning Cinematography. An Independent Vision. A Personal Touch.

People often ask me why I’ve decided to put a twenty-year career in television behind me to focus on weddings. Some of my friends think I’m mad, but for me, this is about something far more important: becoming an independent filmmaker again.

The Freedom of the Independent Eye

I have spent two decades as a Producer, Cameraman, and Editor, crafting stories for the BBC Natural History Unit, Netflix, National Geographic, Channel 4, NHK, and France 5. From landmark series like Planet Earth and BBC Natural World specials narrated by Sir David Attenborough, to writing comedy sketches voiced by Matt Berry, my career has been shaped by the balance of working to a specific brief while bringing my own creative flair to the table. I’ve always believed that the job is to truly understand what the audience wants, deliver on that promise, and then find ways to exceed those expectations.

My work was recognized at the 2021 RTS Scotland Awards, where I was a Winner for Professional Excellence in Camera for the series Stormborn, narrated by Ewan McGregor.

But in the world of big-budget broadcast, you are often just a cog in a wheel. I found that narratives were too often chopped and changed at the whim of television commissioners, and in that process, a story can lose its soul. By returning to my roots, I’ve come full circle—moving away from the "day job" of telly to reclaim my voice as an artist.

A Purer Form of Storytelling

Now that I have returned to my roots as an independent filmmaker, my time is split between capturing wedding films and working on my first feature film. I find these two worlds incredibly complementary; each pushes my craft and my storytelling further than ever before. It allows me to put my heart and soul into a purer, simpler, and more effective form of filmmaking.

As an independent filmmaker, I can see the story in the people I meet. That "through line" stays with me from our very first conversation, through the filming on the day, and into the final edit. This allows me to build a truly cohesive narrative that remains faithful to the people at the heart of it. I’ve discovered that I can invest more of myself—my passion, my skill, and my love for the craft—into a personal film than I ever could for a faceless audience of millions.

Capturing the Narrative

In many ways, the production values I now bring to a wedding exceed the television I’ve made for the last two decades. I am every "cog" in the process now. From the moment you contact me to the final edit, I am the one finessing every frame.

I look for the balance between the grand, cinematic scale of the day and the small, human moments—the witty exchanges, the quiet glances, and the genuine emotion. Having spent decades chasing elusive wildlife, I’ve found there is a beautiful simplicity in capturing human connection.

I’m more excited about making stories now than I have been in 20 years. I’ll give your wedding film the same care I’ve given to every television programme in my career—ensuring your story is told with the love it deserves.

THE CRAFT

From the historic halls of Edinburgh's castles to the windswept peaks of Skye, we specialize in capturing the connection between people and the land. Every frame is carefully crafted to reflect the authentic atmosphere of your wedding day.

Cairn captured the soul of our wedding in Glencoe. The film felt like a piece of cinema—moody, romantic, and breathtakingly honest. Watching it back brings the scent of the heather and the chill of the Highland wind right back to us. It is truly a work of art.
